Saura Summer Updates - August 2, 2020

Orientation & Enrollment

South Stokes will be hosting Orientation for all students the week of August 17-21.  Appointments are available for freshmen on Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18.  Appointments for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students are available on Wednesday, August 19 and Thursday, August 20.  We ask that no more than two (2) family members attend the session with their student to limit the number of individuals gathered at one time.

Orientation sessions will begin in the gym at your appointment time. A small group of students and their families will meet with Mrs. Cheek and Mr. Tedder to learn about the school year and review the schedule for Orientation.

Following the introduction session, students and their families will visit the library for Chromebook checkouts and to gain access to student and family accounts.

You will then visit your students' teachers to learn about the courses they will be taking, how to access course materials, and ask any questions you have about expectations and communication.

Please plan to be on campus for approximately 60-90 minutes.

Students who are interested in the 100% Remote Plan should indicate this on their 2020-2021 Enrollment Forms.  We ask that anyone opting for the 100% remote instruction commit to at least one quarter.

Please review the re-launch plan and contact the school with any questions.

What Will School Look Like?
Many of you have asked what school will look like when students are back in school.  Stokes County Schools will be using guidance from local, state, and federal agencies to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.  Requirements will include masks and social distancing throughout the school.  You can view much of the guidance in the North Carolina Health and Human Services' StrongSchoolsNC Public Health Toolkit (K-12).  The guidance is  updated regularly based on the latest data and we will continue to update our plans accordingly.  We will share about the changes students will see at school during orientation appointments.  Please call the school if you have any questions.

Summer Workout Information
This week the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) announced the fall sports season is delayed until at least September 1.  Football, volleyball, and soccer workouts continue until fall sports begin.  The week of August 17 will be a "dead period" with no workouts that week.    Contact coaches for information

You can view all of the NC High School Athletic Association's guidance regarding summer workouts online at https://www.nchsaa.org/news/2020-6-8/nchsaa-summer-guide-reopening-sportsactivities.

School Fees
School fees will be collected once schedules for students are finalized.  We ask that families please set up an account on School Cash Online.  When fees are applied for your student, you will receive a notification and be able to see the fees on the site.  You can then pay the fees online or in the office at school.

Chromebooks

Students should return Chromebooks, chargers, calculators, and other school materials this week.  The office will be open 7:30 am until 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday.  Please call the school and let us know if you need assistance getting materials back to school and we will work with students to get items returned.  Students who do not return risk not having an up-to-date device for the start of the school year.  Students who do not return Chromebooks will be charged $250.

2020-2021 School Year

As you have probably heard, Governor Cooper has not released information about what the new school year will look like.  While Stokes County Schools wants in-person, face-to-face instruction for the entire school year, we have been instructed to prepare three plans -- one for reopening at full capacity, one for opening at 50% capacity and one to continue remote learning, with buildings remaining closed.

Plan A
Allows all students to return to school and requires additional sanitizing of schools and buses, health screenings as students arrive, and restricted use of common spaces, including cafeterias.

Plan B
Involves reopening with buildings and buses at 50% capacity, would require alternative scheduling. Our students would alternate between virtual and in-person classes to reduce the number inside the building at one time. Stokes County Schools is working on the details of this plan at this time and will announce them as soon as they are finalized.

Plan C
This option would be to continue to keep our buildings closed and we would use improved remote learning when school buildings closed because of the virus.

While we hope Governor Cooper says we will use plan A for the entire school year, we anticipate he may move us from one plan to another based on the number of COVID-19 cases in the state.

Stokes County Schools asks our parents to make the same plans we are asked to make. Have a plan for your family, for each of the Governor’s plans.

Stokes County School is committing to offer high-quality education for our students in the 2020-2021 school year.  Our county and our school will continue to share information as it becomes available.
