Saura Weekly Updates - June 6, 2021

 


Thank you for your support during the 2020-2021 school year!  It was a difficult year for students, staff, and families and I am proud of the work we accomplished this year despite the difficult circumstances.  I hope everyone has a time to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy our break this summer.  Much planning is going into the upcoming school year and we hope you'll check our website, Facebook page, and Twitter during the summer months to stay up-to-date with all that's going on at South.

We look forward to seeing you in August!




Report Cards
We continue to wait for some test scores from the state.  As soon as they arrive, we will finalize all grades and mail report cards home to students and families.  We hope they will arrive in mailboxes by the end of this week.



Chromebooks & Other School-Owned Materials
All students should return school-owned calculators, Chromebooks, chargers, hot spots, books, and other materials to the school.  Any devices not returned will be added to the fees owed list.


Summer Meals
Breakfast and lunch will be available free to students attending summer school and participating in the driver's education class in June.  Meals will also be available for pickup between the hours of 11:00 am and 1:00 pm at Chestnut Grove Middle School, Piney Grove Middle School, and Southeastern Stokes Middle School June 2nd-August 23rd.  Friday's pickup will also include meals for the weekend.  


Driver's Education
The next driver's education class will be held June 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 14 from 8:30 am - 1:30 pm at South Stokes in the auditorium.  The class roster for the next class is posted on the Driver's Ed page of the school website.   Students who will not be able to attend this class should contact Cindy Mitchell at South Stokes (336-994-2995).  Lunch and breakfast will be available for students attending.



Yearbook Updates
All yearbooks have been purchased at this time. We do have a waitlist in case additional copies become available. You can contact the school office or Ms. Alyssa Smith (alyssa.smith3@stokes.k12.nc.us) if you would like your name added to the waitlist.


Sports Updates

Many of our athletic programs will offer opportunities to workout this summer.  You can find contact information for all of our coaches on our school website.  You can also find details and/or contact information in our Summer 2021 Athletic Information document.

Cheerleading for 2021-2022
There will be a meeting for those interested in cheering during the 2021-2022 on June 2 at 6:00 pm in the cafeteria.  Tryout dates are June 9th-12th and the tryout video will be posted before tryouts begin.  For more information, contact Teresa Hicks at hickst6896@gmail.com.

Women Golfers Wanted!
The Saura Women's Golf Team is in need of players.  If you are interested even if you have never played, call the school or contact Coach Mendenhall (fkmendenhall@hotmail.com).

Men's Soccer Workouts
The men's soccer team will workout in the evening this summer.  For information, contact Coach Danny Bowman (drbowman54@gmail.com ).


Volleyball Workouts
The volleyball team will also workout this summer.  Contact Coach Megan Condon (mcondon98@gmail.com) for more information.




Freshman Orientation
Plans are underway for Freshman Orientation in August.  Freshmen and their families will receive information about the program as we approach the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.  If you have questions about South, feel free to call the school or email Mrs. Cheek (johnna.cheek@stokes.k12.nc.us).

Congratulations, Class of 2021!

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our Class of 2021 on Friday evening.  We were very fortunate that the rain held off and we were able to hold a traditional ceremony outdoors.  If you weren't able to attend, you can watch the ceremony on the South Stokes YouTube channel.










Spring Exams 2021
Makeup exams will be given on Tuesday, June 1 beginning at 8:30 am.  Any student who did not take their state exam last week should be at school on Tuesday morning to complete their exam.  If you are sick and need to schedule another date to take the test, please contact Mr. Tedder (matthew.tedder@stokes.k12.nc.us).  School will dismiss at 12:20 pm on exam days.

Physicals
Sports physicals will be given on campus on Tuesday, June 1 from 3:00-5:00 pm in Room E5.  Any student interested in participating in athletics next year will be required to have a current physical on file.  The SPORTS PHYSICAL FORM can be found on the school website under Athletics.  The cost is $10.

Saura Weekly Updates - May 23, 2021

 

Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate our students' accomplishments at Awards Day on Friday!  We have many bright, talented individuals and it is always a pleasure to celebrate with them.  If you didn't get a chance to attend, you can watch the presentations online on the South Stokes YouTube channel.





Spring Exams 2021
Exams will be given May 25-June 1.  Students should make sure all Chromebook keys are working and report any technology issues to Mrs. Himmelspach or Mrs. Campbell.  State exams which include English 2, Math 1, Math 3, Biology, and many of our Career and Technical Education courses will be given on campus in person.  Teacher made exams will be delivered remotely.  School will dismiss at 12:20 pm on exam days.





All students should return school owned Chromebooks and hot spots to the school after they complete their final exam for the semester.



Senior Updates

AWARDS DAY, GRADUATION, and MORE!
Updated senior information for the rest of the year can be found in this handout.

Graduation is scheduled for Friday, May 28, 2021 at 7:00 pm!  Under the latest executive order we will be able to hold a live graduation outside at the football stadium with no limits on the number of individuals who may attend.  In the event of severe weather, the ceremony will be moved indoors which would be a ticketed event.  We plan to distribute 6 tickets to each graduate at the second required graduation practice for the indoor event.  All guests (including small children) will need a ticket to attend if the ceremony is moved indoors.  If outdoors, masks are encouraged when within six feet of individuals not in your household.  If indoors, masks continue to be required inside schools.

Graduation practices are scheduled for May 26 and 27.  Seniors MUST attend graduation practice to participate in the ceremony.  Seniors should make plans now to attend!

Theatre Performances
The South Stokes Theatre Department performed its first live show since Fall 2019 this past weekend.  Be sure to check out this past weekend's performance and another recorded performance on the South Stokes YouTube page.

School Nutrition Information

Prom 2021
Prom 2021 is in the books.  A huge thank you to Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Boak for making the plans, to Mike and Dale Farmer for hosting us at their venue, to our junior homeroom teachers for helping chaperone, to the parents and staff who helped provide snacks and drinks for the event, and our students who made it a fun evening!  Congratulations to our Prom King, Trevor Brown, and our Prom Queen, McKinley Carter!

We will have a senior meeting on Thursday morning, May 13 at 10:05 am to provide seniors with information about upcoming events as we prepare for Graduation.  All seniors are encouraged to make plans to attend.

Breakfast and lunch will continue to be free for all students through the remainder of the school year.  The program will soon begin offering extras for sale in addition to distributing the meals.  Students must receive a meal before being able to purchase chips, snacks, cookies, and extras.  Students will only be able to purchase extras if they have money or there is money on their accounts.  No charging of extras will be allowed.  You can view your student's lunch account and add money to accounts at https://www.k12paymentcenter.com/.  You can also view the menu for the month on the Stokes County School Nutrition website.
