Saura Weekly Updates - September 1, 2019

First Week Complete!
It was a great first week back at South.  Be sure to check out our social media pages to see pictures of what our students did in class this week.  We look forward to seeing students back at school on Tuesday after the Labor Day Holiday Monday.

Dismissal Traffic Changes!
There have been several complaints with cars parking on the public road coming into the school parking lot at dismissal time.  The backup in the afternoons is also a hazard because several people are crossing the double yellow lines to get around the traffic and we do not want people to receive tickets from the NC Highway Patrol.  Starting Tuesday, the car rider line will be directed to the bus parking lot where there will be double lines for cars waiting on dismissal.  Bus riders will begin loading buses in front of the school.  We anticipate this may cause additional delays, but after consulting with the Sheriff's Department and district leaders we determined this is the safest way to address potential hazards and maintain the safety of students.  Please enter the parking lot on the right in the curve before the spirit rock if you are picking your child up in the afternoon at dismissal.  If you would like to avoid the traffic in the afternoons, arrive around 3:25 or 3:30 pm which should allow you to drive through quickly as most of the incoming traffic is thinning out by that time.  People waiting to pick students up at dismissal in the front of the school will be asked to move their vehicles to the car pick-up line.  Morning drop off will continue to be at the front of the school.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to eliminate traffic violations and maintain student safety.

Update Student Information
SnapCodes and links to update student information went out this week in emails to families.  Please review your student's information and make any necessary updates as soon as possible to help us keep our records up-to-date.   Enter your SnapCode at the Returning Student link HERE.  New students who have already filled out paper registration forms for this school year do not need to complete the online registration.  If you did not receive a SnapCode, please contact the school and speak to Jill Tuttle who will be glad to help you with the code.

Parking Permits - PRIORITY DEADLINE APPROACHING

Parking permit applications are available on the school website under the student section. All past fees must be paid to obtain a parking pass.  Please double check to make sure your application is filled out completely, including the parent signature. Checks must include a phone number.  The priority deadline is Wednesday, September 4 at 4:00 pm.   Parking spots will be assigned beginning on September 5th in the order that applications were received with seniors receiving first priority for front lot parking spots followed by juniors.  Applications submitted after 4:00 pm on September 4th will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis with no further priority given to grade level.

Chromebook Pick-up

Students who have not picked up their Chromebook are encouraged to pick them up as soon as possible.   Students and parents/guardians who have already had training at South Stokes are not required to attend another training, but all students will need to turn in an updated Chromebook Agreement Form (last page) and the insurance/maintenance fee to receive their devices.  New students and their families may schedule training by contacting Mrs. Himmelspach or Mrs. Campbell in the media center.  The Chromebook Agreement Form (last page) and $25 insurance/maintenance fee are due at time of pick-up.  If you would like information on a payment plan for the insurance fee, please contact Mrs. Cheek.

Accident Insurance

Student accident insurance is available to Stokes County Schools students through a group accident insurance policy.  Students participating in athletics, internships, and many other school activities are required to have accident insurance through the group plan or comparable coverage.  Visit the Student Accident Insurance webpage for more information.

Fall Pictures
Fall pictures for 9th-11th graders will be taken on Thursday, September 5.  Students will receive information about pictures in homeroom this week.  Also, seniors who did not have their pictures taken during the summer can have their pictures made for the yearbook on Friday, September 6.  There is no charge for having pictures made for the yearbook, but seniors wishing to have proofs sent to their home should bring a $20 sitting fee.

Drivers Education
Registration for the next drivers ed class is now available on the South Stokes website on the Drivers Ed Page.  The class will be held beginning September 23 from 3:30-6:30 pm and end on October 7 (no class October 4).  Students born on or before March 23, 2005 are eligible to register for the class.  To register, read the information and complete the online registration form at the bottom of the Drivers Ed Page.
