Saura Weekly Updates - May 3, 2020

Teacher Appreciation Week
May 4 - May 8 is Teacher Appreciation Week across the country.  At South Stokes, we are thankful to have a wonderful group of teachers who recognize that students have individual needs and who work diligently to meet those needs, whether in the classroom or, now, remotely.   In addition to our teachers, we recognize the role each staff member plays in teaching students each day.  Not only our teachers, but our bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria staff, counselors, assistants, and administrative professionals in the office all recognize their impact on students each day as we work with our Sauras to attain their goals.  Please join me in acknowledging the contributions of our community of teachers this week and every week!  We are truly blessed with the BEST!

Remote Learning Continues Through June 3, 2020
Please continue to encourage students to log in and complete assignments through the remainder of the school year.  Most of our high school courses build on one another and/or contain content students will need later in the workplace or college.  If students or families have questions about the coursework in a class, please contact your teachers.  Our teachers all want students to be successful during this time of remote learning and will be glad to assist you.  You can also call the school between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday and we will be glad to assist you.

Senior Updates

Seniors should have received an email invitation to a Class of 2020 meeting for Tuesday, May 5 at 3:00 pm.  They were sent a link to the online meeting so we can discuss updates at this point.  We are planning many ways to recognize our seniors and would like to update them on the details we have at the moment.

As you know, seniors throughout the county voted for their preference for graduation this past week.  Results of these votes are below and more detailed information can be found on the Stokes County Schools Facebook page.  We will talk about the results and more in the meeting this week.

** Option 1 - Virtual (recorded) ceremony
** Option 2 - Drive thru Graduation
** Option 3 - Social Distancing Graduation
** Option 4 - August 1 Graduation
(Click for details about each option)

Class of 2020:
Class Motto, Song & Flower
While we know this year's graduation will look different than in the past, we are working on our plans to recognize and celebrate our seniors.  Ms. Spargo and Mrs. Patterson need seniors' help in selecting the Class of 2020 motto, song, and flower.  Ms. Spargo sent an email to seniors last week and we ask that seniors continue checking their email as we have lots of planning to do and will need their input!  Seniors can provide input through the Google Form located on the Senior Page of the school website. (If students have trouble viewing the form, refreshing your webpage and clearing your cache and cookies should help you access the page.)

AP Exams
There will be a meeting for AP students through Google Meet on Wednesday, May 6 at 3:00 pm.  An invitation was sent to their school email with the link to the meeting.

CollegeBoard has been working to make sure all students will be able to take AP exams from home if needed.  AP students can find all of the AP updates online (link below) which includes the testing schedule.  Exams are scheduled for May 11-22 with a specific day and time for each exam.  The exams will be much shorter than previous exams and AP teachers will continue to share updates with students as well.  We anticipate we will soon have an online meeting with AP students to make sure they are prepared for exam administration.

AP EXAM UPDATES (Including schedule)

9th - 11th Graders' Grades

Last week I sent an email about the state's guidance on grades for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students.  You can view the presentation below.  If you have questions, please call the school and speak with Mrs. Cheek or Ms. Gallimore.

**  I did not cover grades for yearlong courses in the video.  We will talk with students taking yearlong classes during the AP meeting on Wednesday.

Registration for 2020-2021
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors should complete their registration for the 2020-2021 school year as soon as possible.  Students received instructions in their email and counselors are available remotely to assist in this process..

We need all students to chose their courses so we can begin constructing schedules for next year.  You can access the Stokes County School 2020-2021 Course Selection Guide online for a list of courses available.

If you have questions or need assistance, contact your counselor.

Remote Instruction Resources
As remote instruction continues, be sure to reach out to teachers if you need assistance.  You can find email addresses for our teachers on the school website's staff page.

A complete list of where teachers are providing instruction can be found is on our website under Remote Instruction Information.  If students are unsure about how to check their email, information about how to log into all student accounts can be found in the Saura Tech Center recently created on our South Stokes website under Students.

Need paper materials?
We know some students have little or no access to internet.  While we prefer students get materials online as we are able to communicate with them more easily live, if students have limited access to remote instruction, please call the school and talk to administrators about paper/pencil options for students.

Ms. Gallimore and I are usually in the office at school from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm Monday through Friday if you would like to call for more information 336-994-2995.
