Saura Weekly Updates - March 29, 2020

Enhancement Activities / Instructional Materials
Teachers and administrators have been contacting students to make sure they can access course content remotely or arranging for paper packets for students to complete at home.  Most of our teachers are delivering content through email, Canvas, Google Classroom, or their websites.  A complete list of where teacher instructions can be found is on our website under Remote Instruction Information.

We strongly encourage students to check their school email at least once a day Monday through Friday for updates.  If students are unsure about how to check their email, information about how to log into all student accounts can be found in the Saura Tech Center recently created on our South Stokes website under Students.  Communication is essential as we work to make plans to deliver content remotely.  Please have your student make a contact with their teachers if they have not already.

Ms. Gallimore and I are usually in the office at school from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm Monday through Friday if you would like to call for more information 336-994-2995.

Please keep an eye on the Stokes County Schools' website, South Stokes website and school social media sites for updates.  We will also send phone messages with relevant information as well.

How Can I Help Students With Online Learning?
We've gathered several resources to help families determine what online learning should look like in their homes and where to find help when needed.  Below are several websites with information about remote learning and how to cope during this time of uncertainty.  Some of the tips we find over and over are listed below along with links to resources.

Best Practices for Learning from Home

1)  Establish a routine

  • Get up at the same time each day
  • Check email when you get started and then again later in the day

2)  Set up a work space
  • Gather all the materials you may need in one space (pencils, paper, calculator, etc)

3)  Communication is VERY important
  • Stay in touch with teacher!
  • Be sure to ask questions
  • If you are not sure how to communicate, check email or call the school 336-994-2995
4)  Use videos like those on YouTube to learn how to navigate online tools if needed

Saura Weekly Updates - March 16, 2020

Schools Are Closed - COVID-19 Update
We know there are a lot of questions about what will happen in response to the COVID-19 school closures.

Here is the information Dr. Rice provided Sunday evening, March 15:

Schedule
• Monday, March 16, from 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, will be a day for you or your child to come to school to pick up your child’s personal and educational belongings. This will include clothing, book bags, medicine, Chromebooks in grades 6-12, and any other items they need.

• March 17-March 27, your child’s school will be in contact with you to offer enhanced educational opportunities.

• As a district, we will be preparing to resume educational programming remotely on March 30 should the state extend the school closure.

• At this time, spring break will occur as scheduled.

• All field trips for the 2019-2020 school year have been cancelled. School administrators are working to get refunds for the trip in light of it being a National Emergency.

• All afterschool daycare has been suspended until further notice.

• Driver’s education has been suspended until further notice.

• Our high schools will try to have proms and graduations when the mass gathering ban has been lifted even if these events are delayed. We will communicate the details when we have them.

Quaker Gap Church - 2265 Flat Shoals Rd, King, NC 27021
We, too, have lots of questions about what will happen with school closures.  As Dr. Rice has shared, he is working with local and state officials and will work to keep us all informed as decisions are made.  We know you are concerned about sports schedules, school events like Prom and Graduation, and have questions about instruction for students.  We will continue to provide information as it becomes available.  Please keep an eye on the Stokes County Schools' website, South Stokes website and school social media sites for updates.  We will also send phone messages with relevant information as well.
