Remote Learning Continues Through June 3, 2020
As you know by now, last week there were several important announcements that impact schools across North Carolina. Even though the school building will remain closed as an instructional space through the remainder of the school year, our teachers will continue providing instruction to students remotely through the end of the year.
We hope all students will continue to stay in touch with their teachers and complete assignments. Due to changes in grading for the semester, some students may be reluctant to continue completing work, but please help us encourage students to remain engaged with coursework. Students will need the knowledge and skills from these courses to help them in future high school classes and beyond and learning during this time can only help improve their grades.
The new grading information allows students to take the highest grade from the end of 3rd quarter or an improved grade earned during 4th quarter. Students and families will also be able to choose a "pass" rather than a numeric grade if desired in courses they pass. Students who did not have a passing grade at the end of the 3rd quarter and who do not earn a passing grade during the 4th quarter will receive a "withdrawal" for the course. If the withdrawal is in a course required for graduation, the student would need to take the course again to earn the credit needed for graduation. Additional resources can be found below.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Grade Changes
I will be communicating additional details in the near future.
If you have questions about any of these recent announcements, please call the school between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday and we will be glad to assist you.
Class of 2020:
Class Motto, Song & Flower
While we know this year's graduation will look different than in the past, we are working on our plans to recognize and celebrate our seniors. Ms. Spargo and Mrs. Patterson need seniors' help in selecting the Class of 2020 motto, song, and flower. Ms. Spargo sent an email to seniors last week and we ask that seniors continue checking their email as we have lots of planning to do and will need their input! Seniors can provide input through the Google Form located on the Senior Page of the school website. (If students have trouble viewing the form, refreshing your webpage and clearing your cache and cookies should help you access the page.)
Registration for 2020-2021
Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors should complete their registration for the 2020-2021 school year as soon as possible. Students received instructions in their email and counselors are available remotely to assist in this process..
We need all students to chose their courses so we can begin constructing schedules for next year. You can access the Stokes County School 2020-2021 Course Selection Guide online for a list of courses available.
If you have questions or need assistance, contact your counselor.

CollegeBoard has been working to make sure all students will be able to take AP exams from home if needed. AP students can find all of the AP updates online (link below) which includes the testing schedule. Exams are scheduled for May 11-22 with a specific day and time for each exam. The exams will be much shorter than previous exams and AP teachers will continue to share updates with students as well. We anticipate we will soon have an online meeting with AP students to make sure they are prepared for exam administration.
AP EXAM UPDATES (Including schedule)
As remote instruction continues, be sure to reach out to teachers if you need assistance. You can find email addresses for our teachers on the school website's staff page.
A complete list of where teachers are providing instruction can be found is on our website under Remote Instruction Information. If students are unsure about how to check their email, information about how to log into all student accounts can be found in the Saura Tech Center recently created on our South Stokes website under Students.
Need paper materials?
We know some students have little or no access to internet. While we prefer students get materials online as we are able to communicate with them more easily live, if students have limited access to remote instruction, please call the school and talk to administrators about paper/pencil options for students.
Ms. Gallimore and I are usually in the office at school from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm Monday through Friday if you would like to call for more information 336-994-2995.

How Can I Help Students With Online Learning?
We've gathered several resources to help families determine what online learning should look like in their homes and where to find help when needed. Below are several websites with information about remote learning and how to cope during this time of uncertainty. Some of the tips we find over and over are listed below along with links to resources.
Best Practices for Learning from Home
1) Establish a routine
- Get up at the same time each day
- Check email when you get started and then again later in the day
2) Set up a work space
- Gather all the materials you may need in one space (pencils, paper, calculator, etc)
3) Communication is VERY important
- Stay in touch with teacher!
- Be sure to ask questions
- If you are not sure how to communicate, check email or call the school 336-994-2995
4) Use videos like those on YouTube to learn how to navigate online tools if needed
Use Your Chromebook Offline (Helpful if you have internet sometimes, but not others)
