Saura Weekly Updates - August 9, 2020

Orientation & Enrollment

South Stokes will be hosting Orientation for all students the week of August 17-21. Appointments are available for freshmen on Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18. Appointments for 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students are available on Wednesday, August 19 and Thursday, August 20. We ask that no more than two (2) family members attend the session with their student to limit the number of individuals gathered at one time. Currently we have about 320 students signed up for Orientation. Be sure to schedule your appointment soon!

Orientation sessions will begin in the gym at your appointment time. A small group of students and their families will meet with Mrs. Cheek and Mr. Tedder to learn about the school year and review the schedule for Orientation.

Following the introduction session, students and their families will visit the library for Chromebook checkouts and to gain access to student and family accounts.

You will then visit your students' teachers to learn about the courses they will be taking, how to access course materials, and ask any questions you have about expectations and communication.

Please plan to be on campus for approximately 60-90 minutes.

When you arrive for Orientation, please enter through the main entrance. A staff member will be on hand to screen students and their family members (including temperature checks). Please remember to wear a mask.

If you have not completed your enrollment forms, please do so before Orientation.

We look forward to seeing students soon! If you have questions about Orientation, please contact the school at 336-994-2995.

Schedule for 2020-2021 School Year
The week of August 17 will be Orientation for all students.  Register for your Orientation appointment now if you have not already.

Beginning the week of August 24, Stokes County will follow Plan C, all remote learning.  Students and families will learn more about how coursework will be delivered during their orientation sessions.  Remote instruction this year will include regular live instruction during the school day allowing students to follow a traditional school schedule whether on campus or working remotely.

On September 8, Stokes County will move to Plan B participating in in-school and remote learning on an alternating schedule.  Students whose last names begin with A-K will attend school on "A" Days and last names L-Z will attend on "B" Days.  The calendar for this alternating schedule is available in the Stokes County Schools Re-Launch 2020-2021 Plan.  The South Stokes calendar has been updated with this schedule as well.

Students who are interested in the 100% Remote Plan should indicate this on their 2020-2021 Enrollment Forms.  We ask that anyone opting for the 100% remote instruction commit to at least one quarter.

Please review the re-launch plan and contact the school with any questions.

What Will School Look Like?
Many of you have asked what school will look like when students are back in school.  Stokes County Schools will be using guidance from local, state, and federal agencies to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students and staff.  Requirements will include health screenings,  masks and social distancing throughout the school.  You can view much of the guidance in the North Carolina Health and Human Services' StrongSchoolsNC Public Health Toolkit (K-12).  The guidance is  updated regularly based on the latest data and we will continue to update our plans accordingly.  We will share about the changes students will see at school during orientation appointments and you are likely to see new signage around campus.

Occupancy Limits in Restrooms
Each staff member, student, and visitor will be asked the following screening questions and have their temperature taken before entering the building:

1)  Have you had close contact (within 6 feet for at least 15 minutes) in the last 14 days with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, or has any health department or health care provider been in contact with you and advised you to quarantine?

2)  Do you have any of the following symptoms: fever, chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, new cough, new loss of taste or smell.

3)  Have you been diagnosed with COVID-19?

If individuals answer "yes" to any of these questions, protocols will be followed according to the NCDHHS Guidelines.

Stokes County Schools has also published a Frequently Asked Questions document for families that addresses many of the questions and concerns you have shared.  Be sure to check out the FAQ document for more information.  Please call the school if you have any questions.

School Fees
School fees will be collected once schedules for students are finalized. We ask that families please set up an account on School Cash Online. When fees are applied for your student, you will receive a notification and be able to see the fees on the site. You can then pay the fees online or in the office at school.

Parking Permits
Applications for parking permits will not be available until closer to the time students return to campus.  We will share further details about parking at Orientation.

Summer Workout Information
This week the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) announced the fall sports season is delayed indefinitely and practices will not begin on September 1.  Football, volleyball, and soccer workouts continue until fall sports begin.  The week of August 17 will be a "dead period" with no workouts that week.    Contact coaches for information about any scheduled workouts.

You can view all of the NC High School Athletic Association's guidance regarding summer workouts online at

Students should return Chromebooks, chargers, calculators, and other school materials this week.  The office will be open 7:30 am until 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday.  Please call the school and let us know if you need assistance getting materials back to school and we will work with students to get items returned.  Students who do not return risk not having an up-to-date device for the start of the school year.  Students who do not return Chromebooks will be charged $250.
