It's also time to Spring Forward so make sure you've moved those clock forward!




Saura Apparel for Sale
The Athletic Boosters have some Saura apparel for sale.  Like the Athletic Boosters' Facebook page to see the items available.  Send a message to let the Boosters know what you'd like to purchase and they will make arrangements for pickup.  Thank you for supporting the Sauras!






Senior Graduation & Sophomore Class Ring Orders
Jostens will be here on Thursday, November 5 to collect graduation and class ring orders.  Seniors should bring their orders at their appointment time (same time as originally scheduled on Oct 29).  You can also order online at Jostens.com.


PSAT Postponed for "B" Day Students
Since we were not able to administer the PSAT on Thursday due to the tropical storm, the PSAT has been rescheduled for January 26 for "B" Day students.


Yearbooks For Sale!
Yearbooks for the 2020-2021 school year are now on sale.  The price is $65.00.  You can purchase yearbooks at school or online.  The link can be found on the school website under Students, click on Order a Yearbook.  Also, information about senior ads is on the school website.  Ads will be due in December.






Yearbook Contest!
The theme of the 2020-2021 yearbook is "Break Free".  Students are encouraged to share their ideas through an essay contest.  Write up to three essays using the prompts below for inclusion in the yearbook.  Winners will receive $50 and runner up will win $30 with a winner and runner up selected for each prompt.


Prompts:
1. What makes you feel free?
2. What do you do in your free time?
3. Free to be you: what makes you unique?

Any work submitted may be featured in the 2020-2021 yearbook.  Essays should be no longer than 350-500 words and share essays with Alyssa Smith by November 24.



Technology Assistance
If students are having problems with their Chromebooks, please submit a Tech Ticket on the school website and our staff will get in touch with you to help resolve the issue.

Reminders about Plan B
Students returning to in-school instruction should review some of the changes they will see on campus.  

  • Bus transportation (will need attestation form and mask)
  • Student drivers - park in front lot in numbered spaces (no permit required at this time) and exit vehicle and enter school when you arrive
  • Breakfast (free for everyone)
  • Where to report when arriving at school (the main lobby will not open until 7:30 am; report to 1st period at 8:00 am)
  • Social distancing (don't gather in groups, maintain space between students)
  • One way hallways (follow the arrowheads)
  • 3rd Period begins at 11:40 am
  • Lunches (delivered to classrooms - eat with 3rd period MENU)







Sports Updates
Sports schedules have been add to the South Stokes Calendar and are aligned to the shortened seasons announced by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).  Volleyball and cross country begin in November and basketball begins in December.  The amended sports calendar can be found below.  Contact coaches for information about any scheduled workouts.

Volleyball tryouts and cross country practice begin Wednesday.  Student athletes must have a current physical on file to participate.  Cross country will meet at 3:45 pm on the track and volleyball tryouts begin at 4:00 pm in the gym.

SENIORS!!!

CAP & GOWN ORDERS

Graduation order information (including cap & gown) was given out this past week! If you were not on campus to attend the information meeting, the video of the presentation can be found below and in the Canvas Homeroom course. Orders will be taken on October 29 from 2-4:30 pm.  Sign up for your appointment to drop off your order by clicking on the Calendly link below:





SENIOR T-SHIRTS

It’s also time to order SENIOR T-SHIRTS! Orders can be turned into the main office, F4 or F6 by Oct. 29. You can also turn in orders in at the office on Oct 29 when you come to order Jostens materials (cap & gown).  All seniors are asked to come by and sign the image for the shirt when they place their graduation orders even if you don't plan to order a shirt.





College Application Weeks & FAFSA Nights
College Application Weeks runs from October 19-October 30.  This is a great time for seniors to apply for college as many schools waive application fees during this time (list below).  Be sure to speak with Mrs. Sawyer or Ms. Dean if you need assistance with applying!



Also this week, counselors will be hosting FAFSA nights to assist students and their families with completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Appointments are available for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night this week.  Any student planning to attend a community college or four-year college should complete the FAFSA to see if they qualify for financial assistance.  The FAFSA is also a required step for many scholarship applications as well.  Registration for the workshops is required.  Please contact Mrs. Sawyer or Ms. Dean for information.



Class Rings
This past week Jostens shared information with sophomores about class rings.  You can watch the presentation below.  Rings can be ordered online or order forms can be dropped off Thursday, October 29 from 2:00-4:30 pm in the main lobby.

Report Cards this Week
Report cards for first quarter will be available this week.  We will distribute report cards to "A" day students on Wednesday and "B" day students on Thursday.  Report cards for students working remotely will be available for pickup in the office beginning on Wednesday.  Any report cards not picked up this week will be mailed home the week of October 26.

First quarter grades account for 40% of course grades for this semester.  Many of our students have done very well, but others are struggling in some courses.  Please encourage students to attend each class, complete all assignments, and communicate with teachers when they need assistance.





College Application Weeks

PSAT
Sophomores and juniors planning to attend a four-year college after high school are encouraged to sign up for the PSAT.  The test will be administered at South Stokes on Wednesday, October 14 ("A" Day Students) and October 29 ("B" Day Students").  The cost is $17 and juniors may be eligible for a fee waiver.  See Mrs. Sawyer or Ms. Spargo to register by October 7.






Bus Information


Students boarding the bus will need to bring a signed attestation form each day.  You can get blank forms from your bus driver, in the main office or download a form HERE.  If you need information about a bus route, please call the school or email Mr. Matt Tedder (matthew.tedder@stokes.k12.nc.us).
